Douglas Stephen Fleck

M, #17, b. 28 July 1954, d. 21 May 2014
Father*Anton Robert Fleck1 b. 24 Apr 1918, d. 17 Jul 2003
Mother*Shirley Lorraine Myhra1 b. 15 Aug 1923, d. 21 Jun 2019
RelationshipGrandson of George Lawrence Fleck
ChartsFleck, Nicolas Desc.
Name-CommHe was called Doug by friends and family. This was not his only name. His father, Anton called him Feller. He explained this to Doug more than once as, “You’re not a man and sure the hell aren’t a little kid, so you’re just plain Feller”.2
Birth*He was born on 28 July 1954 at St. Luke's Hospital in Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA
He was the son of Anton Robert Fleck and Shirley Lorraine Myhra.1
(Witness) ResidenceHe lived with Anton Robert Fleck and Shirley Lorraine Myhra at 516 2nd St. NE, Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA. The family moved into the house in 1952. The house had four rooms, none of which was a bathroom. There was electricity, but no water or sewer. The coal shed was about twenty feet out the back door, and just beyond was the outdoor toilet. At the west entrance was a “front” shed, and at the east entrance was the “back” shed. Below the floor of the back shed was a cistern. Until the house was hooked up to city water and sewer, water was hauled into the cistern for bathing and washing clothes. Two more bedrooms were added, just in time for the “Little Kids”.
Graduation* In 1977, Douglas graduated from Dickinson State College, at Dickinson, Stark Co., N.D., USA, with a BS in Social Studies Education/Health and Physical Education.3
Graduation In 1986, Douglas graduated from Montana State University, at Bozeman, Gallatin Co., Mont., USA, with a Master Degree in Educational Guidance and Counseling.3
(Witness) FuneralHe was a pallbearer at the funeral of Keith Anton Fleck in 1988.4
Employment*He was employed as a high school football coach, teacher, and counselor at various schools in North Dakota, Montana and Arizona.
Retirement* In 2013, he retired from Mountain View Elementary at Rio Rico, Santa Cruz Co., Ariz., USA.3
Death* On 21 May 2014, at age 59 he died while hiking on The Anza Trail in Rio Rico, Santa Cruz Co., Ariz., USA, One of the trailheads for the Anza was only a mile from Doug and Patty's house. It had become an almost daily ritual for him to get up early and hike there during the early morning hours. Doug, like so many Flecks had a heart condition that has left many of them dead at an early age. Doug had two previous heart attacks from which he recovered. Patty told me that the night before he died, Doug had been restless and gotten up during the predawn hours to rest in his recliner. This was not unusual for Doug and Patty thought nothing was out of the ordinary. However, on the trail he contacted Patty from his cell phone saying he did not feel good. She responded by encouraging him to start back slowly and call 911. Doug succumbed a mile from the trailhead where another hiker found him and made the 911 call.3
Funeral*Douglas's funeral was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA, on 17 July 2014. Father Tomy Raphe officiated.
Burial His remains were buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA
