F, #1035, b. 1802
Shirley Lorraine Myhra
F, #4, b. 15 August 1923, d. 21 June 2019
Birth* | She was born on 15 August 1923 at home on the family farm in Upland Twp., Divide Co., N.D., USA. |
School attendance* | Shirley attended Upland # 1 in Upland Twp., Divide Co., N.D., USA. |
Marriage* | She married Anton Robert Fleck, son of George Lawrence Fleck and Anna Marie Fleck, in Plentywood, Sheridan Co., Mont., USA, on 19 May 1942. Shirley was 18 years old. Anton was 24. The were marrried by Justice of the Peace E. E. Belanski. Later they were married by the priest at St. Patricks, Rev Fr John C Wingering.1 |
Residence* | She and Anton lived at 516 2nd St. NE, Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA. The family moved into the house in 1952. The house had four rooms, none of which was a bathroom. There was electricity, but no water or sewer. The coal shed was about twenty feet out the back door, and just beyond was the outdoor toilet. At the west entrance was a “front” shed, and at the east entrance was the “back” shed. Below the floor of the back shed was a cistern. Until the house was hooked up to city water and sewer, water was hauled into the cistern for bathing and washing clothes. Two more bedrooms were added, just in time for the “Little Kids”. |
Retirement* | In 1977, she retired from Red Owl Store at Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA. |
Anecdote* | Besides her religious views, and unquestioned family loyalty, Shirley stood for many things during her life. She was honest to a fault, talented in a self-learned way, discovered healthy eating for herself and her family, practiced healthy living, and was intelligent, loving, and thrifty. 1. Honesty: she could not tell lies, even innocent fibs. She did the right thing when no one was watching, and she expected that behavior of her children. 2. Self-learned Ways: furniture was expensive for the family. Shirley learned carpentry, and from her lovely plywood built end tables, book shelves, night stands, corner cupboards, and dressers. On the sewing machine she was a wiz: dresses, including wedding gowns for her girls and shirts for her boys—even a leisure suit. There was always partially cut pieces of cloth on tables and benches waiting for her to sew. She crocheted rugs, caps, and even a wedding dress. She knitted, darned, and patched jeans for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. 3. Baking: Ask some of the older generation if Shirley could cook. Every day for years she baked cookies for Neumann Drug lunch counter (to her dismay, when she delivered them at noon she could not keep the family dog, Booty, from making the trip running alongside the car. She probably wouldn’t have minded this much, except Booty invariably got far enough ahead so he could do his toilet on the Court House lawn). Ask people who ate her and Ruth Peterson’s meals for the Kiwanis, and those that bought pies and cookies Shirley baked and sold. Perhaps we are biased, but ask any of her kids who was the best cook. They knew she made the best bread, lefse, date bars, raisin rock cookies, pies, beef roasts, and potato salad in Divide County. 4. Healthy eating: Shirley, before whole wheat flour was available in Crosby, bought a coffee grinder. She got wheat from the local elevators and ground her own whole wheat for bread. Her daughters swear by her daily vinegar-honey-water before breakfast drink. Some might disagree on this, but she often went vegetarian (yea, many of her meat-eating habits rubbed off on her kids). She made her own yogurt until a few years ago and always saved water from boiling potatoes and vegetables for her soups. And most important to her, “Never eat too much of anything, it’s not good for you.” 5. Intelligent and learned: Shirley was a standout in math. She never took math beyond geometry, yet she solved high school trigonometry homework for her kids. However, often she couldn’t explain how she derived the answers. She read voraciously and spent hours reading aloud to her children. Early on, Shirley was a Republican, and could hold her own in arguments with our Roosevelt-Democrat father. 6. Loving: Probably no need to say much more than she could never hold back tears when any of her kids were leaving Crosby. 7. Thrifty: Shirley probably not unique in her age group, but she was extremely thrifty. “I never forgot the Dirty Thirties,” She told us often. Saving included plastic bags, potato skins and coffee grounds for gardens. Saving money could interfere with her sense of loyalty. Mom was a Red Owl shopper, some people shopped only at Larson’s. So if peas were 30 cents a can at Red Owl, she would send one of us to Larson’s to get the 25 cent a can deal across the street. Did Shirley have faults? Her house was mostly clean, but normally in disarray and might even have the appearance of “a little dirty.” She probably loved her family too much and she could not always deny them when it was perhaps the “right thing to do."2 |
Death* | On 21 June 2019, at age 95 she died at St. Luke's Medical Center in Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA. She had been admitted four days earlier on Tuesday.3 |
Funeral* | Shirley's funeral was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA, on 27 June 2019. Celebrant was Reverend Bill Cosgrove. Tributes were given by Shirley’s granddaughters Stephanie Schock and Erika Wolf Miller. Casket Bearers were her grandsons Anthony and Patrick Wolf; Derek Fleck; Ryland, Preston, Kirby, and Tyler Fleck; and Jackson and Matthew Nichols.3,4 |
Burial | Her remains were buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA. She was buried between her husband Tony and her son Doug.3,4 |

Marriage* | He married Elizabeth Letzelter, daughter of Philipp Letzelter and Katharina Naas.1,2 |

Death* | On 19 February 1795, at age 55 he died (recorded as 1 Ventôse Year III of the French Republican Calendar) in Wingen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. “Today, first of Ventôse in the third year of the French Republic, at 2 PM appeared before me Bernard Louis Gemeiner, member of the town-council of Wingen to register this act in the town hall, the citizen Johannes Fleck, national forester in Wingen and 31 years old, tenant of the citizen Johann Adam Schlick who came from Fischbach to Wingen in order to serve as a police officer of the Republic, and also Georg Walther, plowman, about 42 years old, citizen living in Wingen. They declared that Johann Adam Schlick died at 2 AM in the house of the aforesaid tenant at the aforesaid date. According to this declaration I went at once to the mentioned house to make certain of the death of the aforesaid Johann Adam Schlick and wrote the present act in the town hall the day, month and year as said above”.3 |

Margaretha Schlick
F, #149, b. 7 June 1777, d. 22 August 1861
Birth* | She was born on 7 June 1777 in Fischbach bei Dahn, Südwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.3,4,2 |
| She was the daughter of Johann Adam Schlick and Elizabeth Letzelter.1,2 |
Anecdote* | In the Wingen birth records for Christian and Matthias Fleck, the record writer mistakenly listed their mother as Maria Catharina Schlick. In the birth records for her middle children, Margaretha is listed as Anna Margaretha Schlick. Perhaps this is not too surprising: in looking at the names of Margaretha’s siblings we see that all but two were females of whom five died quite young. Her parents, in some cases, reused names. The Book-Fischbach bei Dahn and Schönau records show the following recorded names for Margaretha’s sisters: Maria Katharina born 11 Nov 1762, Maria Katharina 1 Nov 1764, Anna Maria born 20 Mar 1767 and died 17 Sep 1767, Maria Eva born 2 Oct 1768, Maria Anna (no birth entry for this sister, perhaps this person is Anna Maria) died 6 Jun 1774, Magdalena born 11 Apr 1774 and died 11 Sep 1778, and Katharina Franziska born 17 Jan 1780 and died 8 Feb 1784.2,5 |
Marriage* | On 16 February 1795, Margaretha Schlick married Johannes Fleck, son of Joseph Fleck and Catherine Barbara Eyer, in Wingen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. Margaretha was 17 years old. Johannes was 39. At the time of their marriage, Margaretha's father was the mayor of Fischbach.1 |
Immigration* | She immigrated to Russia on 11 November 1809 , along with her children Christian Fleck, Georg Fleck, Matthias Fleck, Margaretha Fleck and Maria Catherina Fleck . They were original colonists and founders of Landau.3 |
Event-Misc* | She was listed in the economic report for German colonists in Russia in 1811 at Landau, Odessa, Russia. The report was started in 1811 and completed in the same year. From it we learn that Landau had a total population of 470 “Souls” In 106 families. There were 236 females and 234 males. Our ancestor family—as did most of the Landau families—owned 2 horses, 2 head of cattle, and a wagon. Only 34 families also had a plow and harrow. Of utmost interest is the fact that Margaretha and her children’s surname is listed as Schlick even though she had been married to Johannes Fleck from 1795 until his death in 1804. They had 5 children together in Alsace recorded as Fleck. Also listed as Margaretha’s daughter was Catharina age 19. Catharina was probably her stepdaughter, Maria Catherina Fleck. Maria’s mother, Catherine Pfeifer (first wife of Johannes Fleck) most likely died of complications during Maria’s birth in 1792.6,7 |
Death* | On 22 August 1861, at age 84 she died in Landau, Odessa, Russia.8 |
Burial* | On 24 August 1861, her remains were buried in Landau parish cemetery by priest Didak Sambor.9 |
Biography* | Loraine (Fleck) McQuade: It is unknown how our ancestress, the Widow Margaretha (Schlick) Fleck was allowed to emigrate to Russia without a husband to care for her and the children, but she did. ... she did what so many others did in those times--bribed the officials to allow them to emigrate to Russia. Records show that she was an educated woman, a noted singer and her family all became educated and prosperous landowners, mayors, sextons, teachers, lawyers, noted singers, goldsmiths, priests, nuns, and composers.10 |
