Raphael George Fleck

M, #173, b. 10 March 1885, d. 8 June 1958
Father*Georg G Fleck1 b. 14 Nov 1854, d. 1915
Mother*Anna Frank1 b. c 1860, d. 1935
RelationshipBrother of George Lawrence Fleck
ChartsFleck, Nicolas Desc.
Name-CommHe was called Ralph by friends and family.2
Birth*He was born on 10 March 1885 in Landau, Odessa, Russia.1
He was the son of Georg G Fleck and Anna Frank.1
Marriage*He married Amelia Hilfer in Landau, Odessa, Russia, on 29 November 1909. Raphael was 24 years old. Amelia was 22.2
Sail ToThey arrived at the port of Kingston upon Hull, England, United Kingdom, in spring of 1913. With them were their children Michael age 3 and Rose age 11 months. They were classified as “Transmigrants, that is alien passengers (other than first-class passengers) who arrived in the United Kingdom, having in their possession Prepaid Through Tickets and in respect of whom security has been given that they will proceed to places outside of the United Kingdom.” From Hull, they would travel almost directly east some 130 miles to reach Liverpool.3
Sail From*He and Amelia were aboard the S.S. Megantic that sailed from Liverpool, England, United Kingdom, on 10 June 1913.4,3
Sail To*They arrived at the port of Quebec, Que., Canada, on 18 June 1913. While in Montreal, Que., Ralph and Amelia's third child, a son was born. They crossed the border and were processed into the United States at St. Albans, Vermont. The manifest shows that Estevan, Sask., Canada was their final destination. The family was only in Canada a short time before moving to a farm some 20 miles south in Divide Co., North Dakota. A year earlier, his younger brother George (See George Lawrence Fleck), used Raphael’s credentials when crossing the border into the United States at Laredo, Texas, from Argentina.5,6,7,2
AnecdoteIn the 1915 North Dakota census George was enumerated in his brother Ralph Fleck’s household at a farm in Blooming Prairie Township. That this was the same farm on which George and Anna raised their family is unknown at this time. This being a state census, other than first and last names, the individual’s sex and age group, not much information was recorded.8
Draft Regsratn*He registered for the draft of World War I on 12 September 1918 at Local Draft Board for the County of Divide, Crosby, Divide Co., N.D., USA.9
AnecdoteThe 1920 census shows that Ralph, wife Amelia, and six children rented a farm where they lived in Troy Township of Divide County. The census also shows that their three youngest children were born in North Dakota. The oldest of those born in North Dakota was Francisca who was five at the time of the enumeration. This would mean that the family moved from Canada to the United States by May 1915 at the latest.5
AnecdoteThe following appeared in the local news section in the March 24, 1992 edition of the Divide County Journal: “Raphael Fleck who resides northwest of town, this week received a letter from relatives residing in Russia. The was sent from a small town near the city of Odessa, on the Black Sea [Landau, probably]. The envelope was seven and one-half inches long and seven inches wide and the whole back and half of the front of it were covered with postage stamps. The total amount of postage necessary to carry this letter to the United States was 5,000 Rubles. Prior to the reign of Bolshevism under Lenin and Trotsky, a ruble was worth 51 of U. S. money. Therefore figuring the old rate of exchange, it now costs $2,500 to send a letter to the United States, while a letter can be sent in return for a nickel. And to think that some people are advocating Bolshevism as cure-all for our economic troubles in this country”.10
Anecdote*From the Dakota Freie Presse: “Mr. Raphael Fleck at Yoder, Wyoming had misfortune happen. His young son was playing with the neighbor boy and they found a dynamite capsule and they lit it. The capsule exploded and got in the young boy’s eyes. They went to the doctor right away for help, but the father had to go way to Omaha where he got help but it didn’t do any good, and his one eye had to be removed. So the young boy has only one eye, and the other eye was replaced with a glass eye. It was a severe blow to the family. It cost Raphael Fleck $400. This is information for friends and acquaintances”.11
AnecdoteThe 1930 census shows that the family moved to Wyoming where they rented and operated an “irrigated farm” in Veteran, an area some fifteen miles southwest of Torrington, Wyoming. The family had made the move from North Dakota to Wyoming sometime between 1924 and 1928 as evidenced by the enumerated ages and birthplaces of the two youngest Fleck children. This census also shows that Raphael and Amelia both completed four years of high school.12
Draft RegsratnHe registered for the draft of World War II on 27 April 1942 at Local Board # 1, Goshen Co., Wyo., USA. When he registered, Ralph was listed as being 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 205 lbs. At the time he was self-employed as a sugar beet farmer.13
Death* On 8 June 1958, at age 73 he died in Torrington, Goshen Co., Wyo., USA.2
Burial* His remains were buried in Valley View Cemetery at Torrington, Goshen Co., Wyo., USA
AnecdoteFrom Ralph’s Obituary:
“Ralph was well educated in Russia and was a butcher by trade. He made many kinds of sausages and his recipe for summer sausage is still handed down in the family. He became a farmer after emigrating to America”.2

RelationshipMother of George Lawrence Fleck
ChartsFleck Pedigree
Fleck, Nicolas Desc.
Birth*She was born circa 1860 in Landau, Odessa, Russia
She was the daughter of Anton Frank and Katherine Glaser
Marriage* Circa 1875, Anna Frank married Georg G Fleck, son of Georg Fleck and Genoveva Michel.1,2
Residence In 1919 she lived at Landau, Odessa, Russia. Anna was widowed, her husband Georg—as near as can be determined—had died four years earlier. Except for her youngest child Anna, who had married Johann Glaser in 1918, the widow Anna’s three next youngest children, Nikodemus 23, Matthias 21, and Rosa 19 lived with her.3,4
Residence* In February 1930 she lived at the family home in Landau, Odessa, Russia.5
AnecdoteIn a letter dated Feb. 22, 1930, Anna wrote: “Nikodemus, his wife Rosa and children are no longer here. They were taken away at night along with many other people. No one knows where they were taken. No way can we explain the pain of losing them. They were told to bake bread and have groceries and meat for three months to take along. Also, they were told to bring warm clothing and if they did not have any, the Government would supply them”.5
Anecdote*Katherine Fleck, granddaughter of Anna Frank related the following: "Anna Fleck was killed by the Communists. She had hidden some money. The different armies would sweep through the villages and take all the food, cattle, cooking utensils, anything they wanted, often leaving nothing for the people. The Communists said that you had to share everything. After they had been gone a couple of days, she purchased a cow, some flour, and food from the Russians who had hidden their provisions. Someone told the “bandits” about her having money and supplies so they returned. According to a letter Anton received and read to his family, they tortured her—nailed her to the barn—and tried to get her to tell them where the rest of the money was. Son Matthew took a pitchfork and killed one of the men. He ran to his sister, Monica Gress’ [Apparent name mix-up: Monika was married to Raphael Berger, her brother Johann Fleck was married to Elizabeth Gress] house but they came and took him from there. He was killed protecting his mother."6
Death* In 1935, she died in Steinfeld, Odessa, Russia.7
